Our handmade baskets are made from the brown ash tree here in northern Maine. Native Americans are known for their talent in using real wood to create a long lasting handmade basket. The brown ash tree is unfortunately, suffering a severe decline, due to disease and over harvesting of woodlots. A good brown ash log must be straight and free of knots, at least 6 inches in diameter and 5-12 feet tall. Sections of the log are cut and pounded until the wood splits along the growth rings, providing splints for weaving and producing splints of exceptional strength.
